Five Family Movies That Will Bring Your Family Closer

Monday, July 29th, 2019

Going to the movies can take on many roles, some of which are a bit more important to others. While most people might think that a movie being a cultural phenomenon or a movie of a generation might be pretty important, nearly everyone will discount how important family movies can be in general. Depending on who you ask, this may be more of a commentary on how society is changing, but it might just be that family movies are made for only some members of the family.

Five Family Movies That Will Bring Your Family Closer

Think about the last time you sat and watched a movie with your spouse and children. Was it animated? Were the parental figures just a bit too out of touch to seem real? Did the CGI overload make it hard to even look at the screen? As time has gone on, what makes for a family movie has really been more about making a movie that keeps a kids attention long enough to give Mom and Dad a breather. Whatever happened to the type of movie that made the family feel closer to each other? You know, the kind of movie that taught an important lesson, even if it was a little too close to reality. As much as it makes you seem like the old guy shaking his fist at everyone who steps on his lawn, they don’t make family movies like they used to.

Then again, maybe they do, but you might have to look a little closer or even go back a few years at the movies that made you and your family feel a bit tighter than before. There might be something to this because if you think about the movie marathons that come on during the holiday season, most of those movies are a few decades old. A classic is a classic, and even if they years have passed, something about those movies has stood the test of time.

If you’re looking for some family movie magic, here are five movies that will bring your family a little closer together:

Charlotte’s Web – Though animated and incredibly uplifting, the audience is fully aware of the harshness of life. It’s a classic.

A Christmas Story – An air rifle, a kid’s imagination, and terrifying pink, full-body bunny suit come together as one of the greatest Christmas movies of all-time.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids – When Dad seems like he bungles everything up, it’s shocking to see one of his craziest inventions actually work! This movie is underestimated, but it has heart, a tremendously talented cast, and a great story to boot.

Little Women – A classic movie based on a classic novel. You really can’t go wrong, and even if the boys in your family scoff at it, if they sit long enough, they’ll be swept away.

Home Alone – Though billed as a holiday comedy, there is more to this movie than just hilarity & hijinks. Once again, a stellar cast make this one of the best movies of the last thirty years & one of the great holiday movies of all-time.

The Walking Dead Halloween Costume Ideas

Monday, July 29th, 2019

Halloween is on the way, and one of the best approaches to take with your costume this year is to pick a recognizable icon from one of everyone’s favorite TV shows. For a really scary twist, you can try dressing up like one of the zombies from The Walking Dead. Not only will people be startled out of their wits when you come shuffling around, but you’ll be bringing back the undead atmosphere that Halloween is supposed to be about anyway.

Now, there have been lots of movies, TV shows, comics, and other media that feature some kind of zombie creature over the years, but the zombies in The Walking Dead are a little bit different aesthetically. For one, they tend to be a bit more gruesome and “real.” A good general feature you can go for if you’re trying to embody one of these kinds of zombies is to focus on missing flesh.

On the show, unlike classics such as Night of the Living Dead, most of the zombies are missing body parts and their skin is falling off. Because of this, prosthetic wounds are a must; the more disfigured and half-decomposed you can look, the better. After all, you’re basically going to be a walking corpse for Halloween. Here are some tips on how to pull this look together:

Clothes – Needless to say, you’re going to need ripped and tattered clothes, so you might want to go to a thrift store and grab some threads that aren’t too expensive. When you make the rips and tears, have them look realistic. Try to give the appearance that you’ve been in a few fights with fellow zombies and that you’ve been dragged through the mud a few times. Add some blood stains with maroon makeup or some other kind of ink.

Face – Your face is what is going to be the most immediately disturbing part of you, so you want it to be good. Get some makeup and make your skin take on a gray tint like that of a corpse. Make your eyes look sunken in, or even make it look like one of your eyes is missing. For those 3D types of effects, like for example a gash on your cheek or skin that is melting off your face and revealing the rotting muscle underneath, you’re going to probably want to use a latex prosthetic.

Just a simple latex scar kit probably isn’t going to be enough, though; zombies are usually quite a bit more disfigured than that, so you’ll have to spring for something fancier to look “realistic.” If you can’t afford it, there are some home-brew ways of achieving similar effects using gelatin and other compounds. Take a look at some tutorials on YouTube if you’re in doubt.

Body – Ideally, your ribs are showing. If you’re not skinny enough to pull this off naturally, you might be able to find a zombie chest plate that makes you look quite a bit more bony and undead. Otherwise, you can imply the decomposing parts of you underneath by soaking parts of your shirt in fake blood.

These are the main elements to use when you’re putting together a good zombie costume that’s inspired by The Walking Dead. Just make sure that you that you keep your zombie instincts in check; you don’t want to end up getting chased around by survivors of the apocalypse.

Three Movies Out Now That Will Put A Smile On Your Face

Monday, July 29th, 2019

You might be like a lot of people out there who have often bemoaned the dreadful state of the movies out now, and in some cases, your attitude is arguably valid. Then again, we are experiencing quite a diverse amount of unique movie making right now that it really is hard to simply say, “Everything is just bad.” In fact, it can probably be argued that the movies out now are some of the most refreshing movies that have been out in a while.

That’s a bold statement, especially when you consider some of the so-called “golden era” periods cinema has had over the course of the last century or so. A quick look at the usual “greatest of all-time” lists has entries in its top ten that were made before 1950. Still, with so many diverse movie makers behind the camera nowadays, utilizing tremendous technology, and working with powerful scripts, today’s movies are something special.

In all honesty, though, it’s important to keep in mind that when it comes to watching a movie, you want to have a good time. Movies are supposed to be entertaining. They don’t all have to be high-art cinema, and they don’t have to be contenders for “G.O.A.T” lists. You want to leave the theater absolutely pumped about a cool CGI sequence you saw or maybe you’re hyped up over a choreographed fight sequence that broke the laws of physics. Maybe you can’t stop laughing at the pound-for-pound best jokes you ever heard.

Three Movies Out Now That Will Put A Smile On Your Face

It’s important to leave a movie theater with a smile on your face, and if that’s what it is all about for you, here are three movies out now that are sure to get the job done:

Life of the Party – A career stay-at-home wife has all that she has known fall apart around her, and now she has to decide what the next part of her life will entail. How about college? It’s a hilarious ride through what can often be difficult material to cover in a movie, but then again, don’t we all get through life’s tough situations with a little humor, too?

Overboard – About 30 years after the original, the new version of this film reverses the roles a bit and tackles some more issues other than just the differences between rich and poor. A diverse cast and a willingness to tug at serious heartstrings make this revamped version a good movie.

Deadpool 2 – Our foul-mouthed hero is back for a second adventure that sees the formation of the X-Force and a mission bigger than himself. With inside jokes abounding and a tongue-in-cheek way of breaking the fourth wall without actually breaking it, this is the kind of sequel you dream of.

The movies out now are sure to be high on the entertainment value. Smiles aside, though, just remember that going to the movies is supposed to be a way to let go of the world for just a little while. Movie makers rely on the idea of suspension of disbelief. In other words, you need to let go of the idea that what you are watching is make-believe & not real. If you can do that & let yourself get swept up into a universe where what you’re seeing is very real, you just might need a crowbar to get the smile off of your face as you exit the theater.

How To Find Movie Theaters Near Me That Serve Food

Monday, July 29th, 2019

Every once in a while, I like to sit down with my parents, and we get to talking about the way life has changed since they were kids. I try to put in my two cents about my own childhood, but as soon as I mention things such as the movie theaters near me & what they offered patrons for a certain dollar amount, my parents roll their eyes. Obviously, things were different between our generations. Later, though, I started thinking about the while movie theater thing, and I realized that for all of my parents’ eye-rolling, we might have more in common than they thought.

If you consider what going to the movies meant in their day versus mine, there weren’t that many differences. We had one screen, a small box office, limited concessions, and you hoped that the sound system wouldn’t fail before the movie was over. Of all of the things that I was most disappointed with during my movie-watching experience, it was the concessions that really bummed me out. The popcorn tasted old, I didn’t have money for boxed candy, and if I went big & bought a soda, the carbonation was zero. It was the worst.

How To Find Movie Theaters Near Me That Serve Food

Nowadays, my movie-watching habits have drastically changed, and to be honest, I think it is because enough movie patrons became ex-movie patrons & started airing their grievances. Luckily, movie theater chains started listening, and the rise of the revamped movie theater came to be. As a consumer, though, I demand more, and when it comes to going out and watching a movie, I want to go to a theater that serves food. Real food.

It sounds a little silly to most, but look around & take notice at the number of theaters doing just that – serving actual meals to moviegoers. The quality of ingredients is top-notch, the freshness is unmistakable, and there is attention given to healthier fare. In other words, I’m not getting frozen bar appetizers warmed through in an oven, and I like it.

So, how do I actually find these movie theaters that serve food. How else? I use the internet. The World Wide Web is more than just email, social media, and creator platforms. The internet gives me the chance to do a basic search for the movie theaters near me, and from there, I can see which of them meets my criteria to serve actual, legitimate meals. Even handier is the fact that any theater of consequence, especially in this day and age, has a website I can visit to look over more than just showtimes. I can see the menus they offer, special events, and even premium offerings that set them apart from other theater chains.

It’s nice to know that when I think about visiting any of the movie theaters near me, I now have more choice as to what my movie-watching experience will be like. Not only do I have reign over the movie I’ll watch, but I know I can confidently find a theater that will offer a quality meal for a good price. Things sure aren’t what they used to be, but in this case, I think that’s a good thing.
